New flights from Udon Thani

Domestic flights from Udon Thani

Thai Vietjet is planning to launch flights between Udon Thani in the north east of Thailand and Chiang Rai from November 26. The 70 minute flight will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays departing Udon Thani at 18.05 and leaving Chiang Rai at 19.40.

The airline will also introduce Udon Thani to Bangkok flights. Starting November 25 flights will depart Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport at 07.20 arriving at 08.30 with the return flight departing Udon Thani at 10.20. A second flight departing Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, will depart from Bangkok at 16:25.

Udon Thani, or Udon for short, is one of the four main cities or the Isaan region and a major transport hub 50 kilometres south of the Laos border crossing at Nong Kai. It became an important centre when the Thai and US governments built a joint military base there during the Vietnam War. The city still boasts a cosmopolitan range of restaurants and bars.

Most of the other attractions in the area are outside of the city. The Ban Chiang Museum is an important archeological site about 40 kilometres south west of the city. Nearby is the Han Kumphawapi or Red Lotus Lake. The Phu Foi Lom Eco-park and the Phu Phra Bat Historical Park are also worth a look.
