Hong Kong Rugby Sevens rescheduled
Hong Kong’s premier sporting event, the Rugby Sevens has been rescheduled and will now take place between November 5-7, 2021.
A condensed World Sevens Series is expected to be played during the year kicking off with women’s events in Paris on May 15-16 and 22-23. This will be followed by a men’s round in Singapore, October 29-30, men’s and women’s rounds in Hong Kong, November 5-7, Dubai, December 3-4 and climaxing in Cape Town, South Africa on December 10-12.
Negotiations are ongoing with London and Vancouver on the possibility of men’s events being held in the window between the end of the Olympics and start of the Singapore Sevens in October.
The Olympic sevens competitions are scheduled to be held on July 26-31 in Tokyo. The International Olympic Committee is committed to all games going ahead between July 23- August 8 though it is expected that many events will be held behind closed doors.
The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens usually takes place at the beginning of April but the pandemic killed it 2020. It had been slated for the same slot in 2021 but it was rescheduled in the hope that the tournament could be played with fans present. The Hong Kong event is the jewel in the IRB Sevens crown largely because of the fantastic atmosphere generated by the thousands of fans that fly in from all corners of the world to attend.
