Astana has been the capital city of Kazakhstan since 1997 when it took over from Almaty. It has a population of around 1.4 million and is one of the most modern cities in Central Asia. It straddles the Ishim River in the northern part of the country. Almaty, in the south, remains the country’s commercial centre and is Kazakhstan’s largest city, with a population of over two million.

In addition, Air Astana has recently signed a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines which will allow both carriers to place their code on a new service between Almaty and Tokyo though no dates have been fixed yet.
