Passport-free Immigration comes to Singapore

Starting from August 5th Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will start to roll out passport-less immigration at Changi Airport. The plan is to strengthen border security while streamlining the immigration process and improving the traveller experience. Called the New Clearance Concept (NCC), all travellers over the age of six years will enjoy automated clearance. All Singapore residents and eligible foreign travellers will be able to clear immigration without even having to present a passport.

Singapore residents, including citizens as well as permanent residents and long-term pass holders, will clear immigration using facial and iris biometrics. Foreign visitors arriving in Singapore for the first time, and those arriving with a new or a different passport from previous visits, will still need to present their passport on arrival but departure will be passport-free.

Travellers then making subsequent visits to the city can create a profile on the MyICA mobile app and generate a QR code by adding their passport information. This QR code can then be used, in lieu of presenting a passport, for multiple visits.

Of course, travellers will still be required to carry their passports for immigration procedures elsewhere, and there will still be occasional checks by ICA officers.
