Modern Ningbo is a major port city and industrial centre but it is also steeped in history. It was the original starting point of the Silk Road. Arab and Jewish merchants were based in the city over a thousand years ago and a Portuguese settlement existed back in the sixteenth century.
It is also home to one of the oldest and most revered temples in China. Tiantong Temple, just outside the city, is over 1,500 years old and set on the slopes of Taibai Mountain and surrounded by ancient trees and bamboo groves.
