Juneyao to fly Shanghai to Melbourne

August 22, 2024. One of China’s largest privately owned airlines, Juneyao Air, is introducing flights between Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport and Melbourne, Australia. Starting from December 19, there will be initially three flights a week deploying the airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Which days it will operate are yet to be confirmed. The aircraft boasts 29 lie-flat seats in business class and 295 economy class seats.

For the January and February peak period, which includes the Lunar New Year holiday period at the end of January, the frequency will be increased to daily.

Flight number HO 1655 will depart from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport at 17:30, for the eleven-hour flight. It will arrive in Melbourne at 07:00 the following morning local time. The return leg, flight HO 1656, takes off from Melbourne at 09:00, arriving back in Shanghai at 16:10.

First Australian destination

“We are thrilled to welcome Juneyao Airlines to Melbourne and look forward to working with them to make this service a success,” said Lorie Argus, Melbourne Airport’s CEO. “Choosing Melbourne as their first Australian destination is an incredible vote of confidence in Victoria, and Juneyao Airlines’ quality service and extra cargo capacity will help further strengthen ties with China.”

Juneyao Air was founded in 2005 and is based in Shanghai. It operates international and domestic services out of both Pudong and Hongqiao airports. The airline’s international network currently operates from Pudong serving Athens, Bangkok, Brussels, Chiang Mai, Denpasar, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Jeju, Kaohsiung, Macau, Manchester, Nagoya, Osaka, Penang, Phuket, Sapporo, Singapore, Taipei and both Haneda and Narita in Tokyo.

The airline has also pencilled in a possible Shanghai to Sydney service, also taking off on December 19, though this has yet to be confirmed.
