New flights between China and Malaysia

JANUARY 24th, 2025. Towards the end of last year, two new services quietly started operations between cities in China and Malaysia. Both are on board small China-based low-cost carriers, Loong Air, which operates a service between Xi’an and Penang, and Lucky Air which launched one between the historic city of Dali, in Yunnan province, and Kuala Lumpur.

Lucky Air’s website doesn’t appear to have an English language option. You could try to navigate using Google’s translate function but payment might be an issue. I gave up before I could discover what payment options were available. However, I did find out that it is a twice-weekly service operating on Mondays and Fridays and Skyscanner can find you a booking agent.

Flight number 8L843 takes off from Dali Fengyi Airport at 13:45 and arrives at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 17:30 after a journey of about three hours and forty-five minutes.

The return leg, flight number 8L844, departs from Kuala Lumpur at 18:30 and arrives back in Dali at 22:00 after a flight of three hours and thirty minutes.

Xi’an to Penang

Loong Air’s service to Penang also operates on Mondays and Fridays. Flight number GJ8305, departs from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport at 13:30 and arrives in Penang at 19:00. The return journey departs from Penang at 20:00 and touches down back in Xi’an at 00:50.

The flight is served by an Airbus A321 and the duration of the outbound flight is around five hours and thirty minutes and a little less than five hours for the return.

Both Loong and Lucky have extensive domestic networks. Lucky is based in Kunming with international flights serving Brunei, Sihanoukville in Cambodia and others around Southeast Asia. Loong Air’s main hub is at Hangzhou and the airline also operates international routes to Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Kalibo in the Philippines, Singapore, and Bangkok and Pattaya in Thailand.
